CHENANGO ICE RINK RENOVATION BRINGS BENEFITS TO BROOME COUNTY NYSERDA Provides Energy Efficiency Assistance
Albany NY (December 20, 2006) - The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today announced the completion of a major mechanical and electrical renovation of the Chenango Ice Rink and Event Center in Binghamton, New York which serves recreational skaters, leagues, and hockey teams. The rink owners participated in two NYSERDA programs, the New York Energy $martSM New Construction Program and Loan Fund Program.
Peter R. Smith, President and CEO of NYSERDA, said "NYSERDA's role in this project was to join forces with Scott Soule, the rink's owner, and a first-rate team of professionals, to bring the Chenango Ice Rink, one of Greater Binghamton's primary hockey facilities, back into focus as an important recreational asset to the city and county. As a result of the energy efficiency measures, the rink will realize an annual energy savings of 423,044 kWh and a cost savings of more than $47,000. It was a pleasure to work with such dedicated people."
The team, comprised of Davis Mechanical Services and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) which provided technical assistance for the project, renovated mechanical and electrical systems in the 31,000 square foot rink. The goal was to reduce overall electrical consumption, lower operating costs of running the facility, and provide a better skating environment.
"It has been a very positive experience to work with people from NYSERDA, Davis Mechanical Services, and SAIC to bring the renovation of the Chenango Ice Rink to fruition. The Greater Binghamton area is near and dear to my heart, and the rink, restored to better-than-new condition, will bring greater community spirit into our lives. For me it has been a labor of love for my friends," said Scott Soule, President of Chenango Ice Rink and Event Center.
The following energy efficiency measures were analyzed and recommended: a clear ice reverse osmosis (R/O) system, chiller system upgrades, a smart drive pumping system, an infra-red ice temperature monitor, a desiccant dehumidifier, variable frequency drives (VFD) on the cooling tower, and high-efficiency lighting. When all measures are installed, the rink will receive an incentive of $68,969 from the New Construction Program. The rink will also achieve an annual reduction of 1,269 pounds of SOx, 635 pounds of NOx, and 231 tons of CO2 providing an environmental benefit to the area.
Chenango Ice Rink management used NYSERDA's Loan Fund Program to assist in the renovation. Tioga State Bank, a participating lender in the Loan Fund Program, provided a 10 year loan to Chenango Ice Rink, with NYSERDA "buying down" the interest rate by 4%. As a result the customer will realize an interest savings of $36,625.20 over the life of the loan.
"It is very exciting for all of us at NYSERDA to see these positive energy saving measures brought into play to improve the quality of life of Broome County residents. In addition, there will be significant environmental benefits - truly a win-win situation." Smith said.
