With Support from NYSERDA, Price Chopper Incorporates Energy Efficiencies into New Supermarket in Warwick
NYSERDA Funding to Help Reduce Supermarket’s Energy Costs
by More than $150,000 Per Year

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today commended the Golub Corporation for incorporating advanced technologies into construction of the newly opened Price Chopper supermarket in Warwick that will reduce the supermarket’s annual energy costs by 27 percent, or more than $150,000 per year.

Construction of the 56,000 square foot supermarket was a two-year project supported by more than $315,000 of incentives from NYSERDA.  This funding supported a variety of energy-saving measures, including high efficiency lighting system and controls, daylighting controls and skylights, high efficiency HVAC units, high efficiency windows and insulation and high efficiency motors, among others.  In addition, Price Chopper will seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED®) certification from the U.S. Green Buildings Council.

“The energy efficiency measures and sustainable construction materials Price Chopper incorporated into its new Warwick store embody the company’s firm commitment to reducing the energy and environmental impact of its operations,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO of NYSERDA.  “I commend Price Chopper for partnering with NYSERDA to reduce its energy usage.  NYSERDA looks forward to partnering more New York State businesses as we work to achieve the ambitious energy reduction goals set by Governor David Paterson.”

“Price Chopper is committed to engineering and constructing stores that are both energy efficient and environmentally sensitive,” said Neil Golub, Price Chopper’s Chairman and CEO.  “We value our partnership with NYSERDA in fulfilling this commitment.”

As a result of its investment in energy efficient technologies, Price Chopper is anticipated to reduce its energy consumption by more than 800,000 kilowatt hours of electricity—the equivalent to the amount of electricity consumed by 123 single-family homes in one year—and to realize a payback after NYSERDA’s incentive of nearly one and one-half years.

Over the past few years, NYSERDA has partnered with Price Chopper on several energy conservation, renewable energy, and combined heat and power projects, including Price Chopper’s store in Colonie, which opened in May 2009, and the Golub Corporation headquarters building in Schenectady which opened this past week.  These projects, totaling more than $1.5 million, have affected a transformation in the way in which supermarkets are designed, constructed, and retrofitted with energy efficient and environmentally sustainable technologies throughout New York State.

NYSERDA’s New Construction Program provides assistance to incorporate energy-efficiency measures into the design, construction, and operation of new and substantially renovated buildings. These measures are designed to save energy through reduced electric demand, and therefore reduce building operating costs. Since the beginning of 2009, NYSERDA has provided more than $18 million in new construction incentives to help businesses, governments, K-12 schools, healthcare facilities and not-for-profit organizations reduce their energy costs and improve their energy efficiency through this program.
