Niagara County Community College and NYSERDA Partner on a $3.4 Million Project to Improve Energy Efficiency

Niagara County Community College (N.C.C.C) and NYSERDA announced today a $3.4 million project to identify and install a comprehensive set of energy efficiency measures, including lighting upgrades, energy efficient motors, variable-speed drives and a chiller. To offset the cost of the $3.4 million dollar project, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) provided nearly $450,000 through its New York Energy $martSM program. The College is now expected to save more than $350,000 in annual energy costs.

"As a part of SUNY (State University of New York), Niagara County Community College provides people of the Niagara region an opportunity to get a quality education at affordable prices," said NYSERDA President William M. Flynn. "By improving their energy efficiency, the College will be able to save hundreds of thousands on energy costs and provide a comfortable atmosphere for students and faculty. These upgrades will help the College remain affordable, while also improving the quality of the campus."

"I am extremely pleased that the State, through the technical expertise and financial assistance of NYSERDA, was able to help our community college reduce its electrical energy consumption and lower its operating costs," said Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte. "Helping our public institutions become more energy efficient and cut costs is a goal we all share, and I applaud the fine work NYSERDA and Johnson Control has exhibited in this project."

Interim President James Klyczek stated, "This energy conservation project has literally brightened the entire campus." Klyczek went on to say, "Without this cost saving contract, NCCC's budget would be seriously impacted. The project will allow NCCC to focus its resources on other important institutional priorities. In the end, the dollars from NCCC's future energy savings will be used to enhance the institution's already exceptional educational programs."

"Niagara County Community College will save millions in energy and operational costs during the next 15 years through an energy performance contract with Johnson Controls, Inc. Johnson Controls, with the assistance of NYSERDA, was able to develop a project that not only improved the learning environment but exceeded the financial needs of the college," said Danny Friend, spokesperson for Johnson Controls.

This project was done through NYSERDA's Commercial/Industrial Performance Program, which provides financial incentives to energy service companies and engineering firms that work with municipal, industrial, and commercial utility customers to identify and implement energy-saving strategies. The incentives, combined with the energy savings, help to pay for the capital improvements. The level of incentives that NYSERDA provides depends on the level of energy savings achieved in a given project as well as the types of efficiency measures implemented.

Johnson Controls, Inc., located in West Seneca, was the energy service company involved in this project. After assessing the energy use and need profiles at NCCC, Johnson Controls, recommended and installed a highly efficient chiller to improve the heating and cooling of the campus, updated lighting with more efficient, compact fluorescent bulbs and installed premium-efficiency motors with variable-speed drives to reduce electricity use. This project is estimated to save more than 3.7 million kWh annually or enough electricity to power more than 615 homes for a year.

NYSERDA's Commercial/Industrial Performance Program began in 1999 and has improved energy efficiency for more than 450 business, municipalities, institutions and not-for-profits. Through this program, NYSERDA has provided approximately $73 million dollars in incentives for project that have produced an energy savings of more than 490 million kWh or enough electricity to power more than 80,000 homes for a year.

Since 1998, NYSERDA has provided more than $26 million to support more than 500 projects in Erie and Niagara Counties. Combined with co-funding from NYSERDA's partners, the value of these projects is more than $65 million. Among some of the other customers NYSERDA is working with in Erie and Niagara Counties, are: State University of New York at Buffalo, eBidenergy.com Inc., Kreher's Poultry Farm, HSBC Bank USA and Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority.
